According to ancient Indian wisdom, chakras (pronounced cha-kra, with a hard “ch” like in “chocolate”) are spinning energy centers in the body that lie along the body’s many energy pathways. Chakra is a Sanskrit word which means “wheel.” The chakras are similar to wheels in that they are spinning vortexes of energy.
The main purpose in working with and understanding the chakras is to create integration and wholeness within ourselves. In this way we bring the various aspects of our consciousness from the physical to the spiritual, into a harmonious relationship.
There are seven major and twenty-one minor Chakra centers in the physical body where vital energy flows and intersects. Through our Chakras, we transmit and receive physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energy.
The goal is to have all chakra centers clear, balanced, and vitalized for peak health and well-being. When any of our chakras get blocked or are out of balance this is then felt on both an emotional and physical level. For example, a lump in your throat when you have something important to say but are having trouble getting it out is your throat/fifth chakra. Or that stabbing pain in your heart or “knot” in your chest when you are sad is your heart/fourth chakra.
